Candice Breitz

I was at the deYoung a few months ago with my sister and we stumbled into a room upon hearing John Lennon lyrics. The piece is titled Working Class Hero: A Portrait of John Lennon. There were about twenty different television screens, each with a extreme close-up of a person's face. The twenty people were of mixed ethnicities and ages. While definitely not in harmony or syncopation, the people sang John Lennon's first solo album a cappella in its entirety. It was a beautiful piece and moved me to tears during the song Working Class Hero. She selected each person singing in the piece based on how John Lennon has impacted their lives. After viewing more of her work online, I have come to greatly admire Breitz as a conceptual artist.
